Special Collections
The Pendleton District Commission contains both a research library and archival collection. Our archives and manuscripts collections focus on the people and places of the Old Pendleton District. The collections include correspondence, business records, photographs, books, family bibles, scrapbooks and personal items. Our artifact collections include textiles, furniture and a variety of objects.

Some notable collections include:

  • B.G. Hunter Collection, 1803-1964: Papers and photographs associated with Pendleton area history and Hunter’s Store
  • T. Franklin Acker Collection, 1845-1972: Anderson County photos
  • Taliaferro Family Papers, 1788-1965: Letters, deeds, financial records
  • Horace G. Williams Collection, 1788-1972: Family records, genealogical and local history material, 1868 Anderson County election returns, Stephen G. McCully Papers, Samuel Maverick land plats, photographs
  • Calhoun Land Company Records, 1893-1896
  • John Verner Stribling Collection, 1878-1929
  • Courtenay Manufacturing Company Records, 1904-1957

The Research Room and Special Collections is temporarily located on the Pendleton District Agricultural Museum on 120 History Lane in Pendleton SC. The Research Room is open Monday-Friday by appointment only. To make a Research Appointment, please contact curator Betsy Johnson at history@pendletondistrict.org or 864-646-7271 .
